Fault code P0013 means ‘B’ Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit/Open (Bank 1). This is an OBD-II general fault code that is related to variable camshaft and valve timing components. In an engine with variable valve timing (VVT), the camshaft is adjustable and the valve timing can be changed. This can result in improved performance or fuel economy.
The VVT system is primarily composed of the camshafts, VVT solenoids and camshaft positioner valves.
The solenoid valve controls oil flow to the actuator which advances or retards camshaft. Powertrain control module (PCM) controls the operation of the solenoid. The PCM will generate the fault code P0013, if it detects that there is a problem in the solenoid or its circuit.
The section of the motor containing the cylinder number 1 is referred to as ‘Bank 1″. The ‘B camshaft’ is the exhaust camshaft, the right camshaft, or the rear camshaft as viewed from the drivers seat.
Other camshaft fault codes: P0011 – P0012 – P0020 – P0021 – P0022

What Are the Causes of Fault Code P0013?
- Contaminated engine oil clogging the VVT solenoid screen (most common)
- The VVT solenoid is faulty (also called the oil control valve)
- Problems with the solenoid circuit for VVT (wiring or windings)
- PCM issues, such as an upcoming software update

What are the symptoms of fault code P0013?
- Engine fault light illuminates
- Difficulty starting the engine, or engine failure
- Misfiring engine
- Engine hesitation, stalling or a jerking motion
- Engine performance problems
- Engine knocking noise
- Fuel consumption increases
How to Fix Error Code P0013?
- Resetting fault codes, and performing a road-test
- Check that engine oil is clean, full and the right viscosity.
- Repair or replace cables leading to oil control valves for exhaust camshafts in Bank 1.
- Replace the oil control for the exhaust camshaft Bank 1.
- Replace the engine control unit
P0013 Fault Code How Serious Is It?
The code P0013 can be a serious one, as it could damage the engine control unit. The engine could stall, or run in an irregular manner. This may leave the driver stranded on the side of the road. Fuel consumption can increase or carbon deposits on internal engine valve components may form. The engine control module can be damaged if the vehicle is operated with a long-term short circuit.
