P0012 Intake Camshaft Position Timing is Over-Retarded on Bank 1 Fault: What is it?

P0012 Intake Camshaft Position Timing is Over-Retarded on Bank 1 Fault: What is it?

The P0012 code is an error code for transmissions in general. This code is found in vehicles equipped with OBD-II and variable valve timing, such as Toyota, VW , Honda, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Audi, Acura etc. The Variable Valve Timing allows the camshaft to be changed dynamically while under load. This strategy can be used to increase fuel economy, power and reduce exhaust emission. P0012 is a fault code that specifically relates to the camshaft. The engine fault light and code will appear if the camshaft is too late.
The P0012 code is set by the vehicle computer when it detects that the camshaft angle desired and the camshaft angle actually measured differ. The ECM will set the code if it detects a camshaft that is in a delayed position, or if the timing of the camshaft on Bank 1 exceeds’maximum delay value.
The code P0012 contains the letter ‘A’ which indicates an intake camshaft for an overhead camshaft system in either sequential or inline. The intake camshaft is indicated if the vehicle has a v-engine.

What are the causes of fault code P0012?

  • Faulty variable valve time actuator
  • Faulty solenoid for camshaft variable timing
  • Low Engine Oil Level
  • Using incorrect engine oil
  • Worn or stretched timing chains
  • A faulty timing chain tensioner or guide
  • Engine oil that is dirty clogging up the solenoid for VVT

Oil pressure and oil flow control the camshaft phaser. Oil viscosity is important for the camshaft control timing to work as intended. Oil that is too thick may cause the system to malfunction, causing operational problems. This fault code, as well as others, can be caused by using the wrong oil.

What are the symptoms of fault code P0012?

  • Engine fault light illuminating
  • Engine difficulty starting due to delayed timing
  • Fuel consumption is increased because the camshaft cannot achieve the highest possible fuel efficiency
  • The engine can misfire or even stall depending on the position of the camshaft
  • The engine is making a rattling sound
  • A rise in exhaust gas emission is observed

The symptoms that you experience may vary based on the timing of your camshaft.

How to Fix Fault Code P0012?

  • Resetting fault code and performing a test on the road.
  • Changing oil and oil filters with an oil viscosity that is suitable for engine specifications.
  • Repair or replace the cable or the connection to the solenoid that controls the oil flow in the camshaft.
  • Replace the oil control valve on row 1 of the intake camshaft.
  • Alignment of the timing chain and repair if needed.

How Important is Fault Code P0012?

Engines may be hard to start or run in an irregular manner, misfire, stall and have difficulty starting. The position of the failure of the eccentric shaft can cause excessive fuel consumption or carbon contamination of engine parts. Depending on the cause, continued use of the car in this condition can cause additional problems with the engine or valve system.
