Your engine could have up to two oxygen sensors, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. Oxygen sensor are essential components of a vehicle’s emissions system. These sensors measure the amount of oxygen in exhaust gases. These sensors send the information to your vehicle’s computer, or powertrain module (PCM). This data is used by the PCM to determine if the engine is too rich or lean. For a petrol car, the ideal air-to fuel ratio is 14:7 to 1. The PCM uses Heated Oxygen Sensors to achieve this. The HO2S measures the oxygen in exhaust. The PCM receives this information. This information is used by the PCM to regulate the fuel supply to the engine. For the oxygen sensor function to be optimal, it needs to heat up faster than exhaust gases. These sensors now have heating elements that operate at fused 12-volt voltage. The engine can reach closed-loop faster and emit less when it is cold. The heater is powered by 12V when the ignition is turned on. In certain circumstances, the computer will activate the heater by grounding the oxygen sensor heater. The P0030 code is activated if the PCM detects an error in the heater circuit of the upstream sensor (Sensor 1), located in the Bank where the 1st engine cylinder is located.

What are the causes of fault code P0030?
The majority of faults relating to this code are cable problems caused by excessive exhaust heat.
- Faulty oxygen sensors (Bank 1, Sensor 1) (sensors located before the catalytic convertor)
- Fuse blowing in oxygen sensor heater circuit
- Damaged cables and loose connections
- Faulty PCM/ECM is a low probability
What are the symptoms of fault code P0030?
The code P0030 is generic and therefore is supported by the majority of vehicles. Symptoms may vary depending upon the vehicle’s make and model. This code can cause the following symptoms:
- Engine fault light illuminating
- Fuel consumption increases (depending on fault)
The O2 heater circuit will affect the O2 sensor’s response time and it will not be able to measure fuel or oxygen in the exhaust during the first 3 to 5 minutes of operation. The PCM will not be able to control the fuel mix and will set the ratio to a fixed value.
How to Fix Fault Code P0030?
- Reset the fault code and perform a test on the road.
- If the P0030 code returns, check the wiring harness and connections. Check that the voltage to the sensor and the ground to the PCM are in good condition.
- Check the fuse in the circuit that contains the oxygen sensor heater.
- Replace the oxygen sensor if none of these steps work.
How serious is fault code P0030?
The vehicle can be driven even when the fault code P0030 appears. A faulty sensor may cause excessive fuel consumption, engine malfunctions, and other damage. To prevent further problems, it is important to diagnose the problem correctly as quickly as possible.
