P0601 Internal Control Module Memory Checksum Error Fault: What is it?

P0601 Internal Control Module Memory Checksum Error Fault: What is it?

Diagnostic trouble code P0601 is a ‘Memory Check Sum Error in the Internal Control Module’. The code is generated when the PCM (powertrain control module) detects a problem internally, usually a failed memory test sum. Verification is a mathematical procedure used to detect errors. Memory is used to store all short-term calculations, including operating system software. The PCM may not function correctly if there is a fault in this area. When the PCM detects a fault during its self-testing it will store the P0601 error code in memory. This code is generated when the PCM detects a communication error between its internal processor or internal memory modules.

What are the causes of fault code P0601?

  • Control module software that is outdated or defective
  • Problems relating to the circuit of the control module, such as loose or damaged connections

What are the symptoms of fault code P0601?

P0601 can lead to multiple problems in your vehicle involving different systems. This code can lead to the appearance of other DTC codes if controller issues cause systems to fail. Symptoms may be intermittent or constant.

  • Engine fault light illuminated
  • The ABS system and the traction control lights are illuminated
  • Irregular gear changes
  • The engine is stalling
  • The engine struggles to start, or fails to start at any rate

How to Fix Fault Code P0601?

The same symptoms are caused by a low-voltage power supply that is faulty. The voltage supplied to the engine control unit may be lower than necessary if the battery has been installed backwards, or if the main fuse has partially blown. This code can be set if the PCM cable is removed without the battery cables being disconnected. Multimeters can be used to check the voltage supplied to the control module.

  • Repair damaged cables and loose connectors
  • Replace faulty PCM, ECM or ECU

How serious is fault code P0601?

The severity of the fault code P0601 depends on its symptoms. The vehicle should not be operated if the engine struggles to start or if there are other serious driving issues. Repair the fault as soon as you can.
