The Engine Control Module or Powertrain Control Module cannot determine if the engine is on or off. The engine controller, also known as the ECM, monitors the input signals to the engine in order to determine if the engine is running. It uses the engine speed sensor (crankshaft positioning sensor), fuel pressure sensors, and primary ignition voltage to accomplish this. The ECM/PCM may not detect the engine’s shutdown if it cannot receive the signal from either of these components. The ECM/PCM’s internal engine shut-down timer calculates fuel distribution, ignition timing and transmission gearshift timing and monitors the ignition cycle.

What are the causes of error code P2610?
- Faulty ECM/PCM or programming errors
- Problems with ECM/PCM ground or power circuits or faulty ECM/PCM
- Short circuit or faulty crankshaft sensor
- Engine cooling system problems
- Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT)
- Electrical faults
- Dead batteries or loose battery cables
What are the symptoms of error code P2610?
Other fault codes related to the P2610 code may be stored depending on its severity. Fault code P2610 usually manifests as follows
- The engine error light illuminates
- A drop in engine performance
- Fuel consumption increases
- Engine driveability issues
How to Fix Error Code P2610?
Diagnostics of the P2610 error code can be challenging due to the many causes that the code could have. The diagnostic and repair procedures may differ depending on the make and model of your vehicle. The codes should first be cleared, and then checked to see whether the fault code is still present. If the fault code returns,
- You should reprogramme the ECM/PCM.
- Cables leading to ECM/PCM must be checked and repaired
- Check the condition of your battery and the cables that connect it
- Check the crankshaft sensor and its circuit
How important is fault code P2610?
The P2610 code indicates that the ECM/PCM is unable to detect the length of time the engine has been turned off. In this case, the PCM will assume that the engine is still running, and the timer for engine shutdown won’t start. The last driving cycle is then considered incomplete. When the engine is restarted, some of the self-tests and readiness monitors will not function. As many components depend on the internal engine shutdown timer performance of the ECM/PCM, the P2610 code must be resolved immediately.
