P0011 Camshaft Position Timing is Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1): What is it?

P0011 Camshaft Position Timing is Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1): What is it?

P0011 can be seen on any vehicle with an OBD-II. It is related to components that control variable valve timing (VVT), or variable camshaft time (VCT). It can therefore only be seen on vehicles that have these systems. Toyota, Volkswagen Honda, Chevrolet Hyundai, Audi, Acura and other brands use such systems.
The technologies of variable valve timing and variable timing for the camshaft are used to make an engine perform differently in certain conditions. VVT, for example, alters the fuel/air mixture by opening the valves of the cylinders at different times.
These systems can display a variety of codes. P0011 is the first-bank “A” camshaft. The intake camshaft, also known as the ‘A camshaft’, is located to the left or in front of the engine. The first bank is the first cylinder. This code indicates the camshaft has exceeded its specified limit.

What are the symptoms of fault code P0011?

An excessively worn out camshaft, like all timing-related problems, can cause engine issues. It may be hard to start the engine, it will fluctuate at idle and you are likely to experience stalling or stuttering.

  • The engine warning lamp illuminates.
  • The engine may have difficulty starting if the camshaft has been out of alignment for a long time.
  • Fuel consumption can increase.
  • It is possible to experience idle fluctuations, misfiring and stalling problems.
  • The vehicle could fail the emissions test.
  • The engine may make rattling or knocking noises.

Note: The symptoms observed in your vehicle can vary depending on where the camshaft is located.

What causes fault code P0011?

A number of mechanical problems can cause the fault code P0011. Most likely causes include:

  • Engine oil that is contaminated or degraded
  • Low Engine Oil Level
  • Incorrect camshaft timing
  • Valve control solenoid stuck or faulty
  • Damaged or faulty valve control solenoid wiring
  • Oil viscosity is a factor that can restrict oil flow from/to the camshaft actuators (phasers) when using the wrong oil.
  • In rare cases, a faulty engine control unit (ECU / ECM / PCM)

ECU faults can also present with different symptoms.

How to Fix Fault Code P0011?

The first thing to do is visually inspect the valves, connectors and cables. Repair and replace any damaged or broken connectors, cables that are short-circuited, and valve solenoids. Replace it with oil that has the right viscosity.
The codes must be cleared after these steps and the engine should be started. Continue to look for the problem if the code returns. The problem could be with the ECU or PCM. These will need to replaced if they are faulty.

  • It is important to clear the fault codes and perform a road test to determine if they return.
  • Check the engine oil condition and level. Add the appropriate oil to the engine, and replace the oil filter.
  • Repair and replace the cables that lead to the bank 1, intake camshaft control valve.
  • Replace the bank 1 oil control valve on the intake camshaft.
  • Check the alignment of the timing chain.

How Important is Fault Code P0011?

Fault code P0011 is quite significant. The engine can run in an irregular manner, stall or have difficulty starting. Fuel consumption increases. On the pistons and engine valves, carbon deposits can form. The timing chain can skip teeth if the vehicle is used for a long time with an incorrect camshaft. This will cause the pistons and valves to contact each other.
