P0016 Crankshaft Position and Camshaft Position Sensors are Out of Sync (correlation), Bank 1, Sensor A Fault: What is it?

The camshaft and the crankshaft are two of the most important parts in your engine. These two components must be perfectly synced for the engine to function smoothly. The engine can malfunction if they aren’t synchronised. This will trigger the fault code P0016. The bank 1 side is where the first cylinder of the engine is located. Sensor A refers to an intake camshaft that is located on the intake-side of the cylinder.
Engine control module controls the timing of various engine components. The ECM uses sensors to detect when adjustments are needed and to make sure that all systems work in sync.
The ECM receives information from the crankshaft sensor about its position. This information is used to determine when the spark plugs of the engine should be fired in order to maintain power and speed. Camshaft sensors send similar information about the position of the engine‘s camshaft.
The ECM will display the P0016 error code if either of these sensors operate outside the normal parameters. The P0016 fault code will be set if the crankshaft position and the camshaft position are out of sync.
These sensors both work by passing a reluctance band through a magnet sensor. The voltage produced indicates the position of each shaft. Two shafts are linked by a timing chain or belt. This code can be triggered by any problem with the components.

What are the possible causes of fault code P0016?

  • Faulty or damaged timing chain or beltFaulty crankshaft or camshaft reluctor wheel
  • Faulty crankshaft sensor
  • Faulty camshaft sensor
  • Cables or connections that are loose
  • Damaged tensioners and guides for chain/belt tensioners
  • Faulty variable valve timer (VVT) actuator
  • Faulty solenoid for variable valve timing (VVT), (oil control valve).
  • Faulty ECU
  • Low Engine Oil Level
  • Viscosity of engine oil is incorrect
  • Blockage of engine oil lines

What are the symptoms of fault code P0016?

  • The engine fault lamp illuminates.
  • Unregular engine operation
  • Reduced engine power during sudden acceleration
  • Engine noises such as a clunk
  • Fuel consumption increases
Timing Chain

How to Fix Fault Code P0016?

  • Replace or repair damaged, worn or broken cables or connections
  • Replace the damaged reluctance wheels
  • Checking and replacing the engine oil
  • Replace the position sensor of the camshaft that is faulty
  • Repairing or replacing cable connections to the OCV or camshaft sensor
  • Replace the engine control module if it is faulty
  • Replace timing gears, belts, guides, and chains
  • After a repair, you should clean the engine of carbon

How Serious is Fault Code P0016?

The buildup of carbon in an engine can lead to spark plugs that are dirty and do not fire. The timing chain, the timing belt, the tensioners, and the guides may be defective, causing major engine damage. This is due to the collision of the pistons and valves. The vehicle can be adversely affected by using it in this condition over a prolonged period. This could lead to misfiring, stalling, and failure to begin. Repairs must be made as soon as possible.
