P0125 Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Closed Loop Fuel Control Fault: What is it?

P0125 Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Closed Loop Fuel Control Fault: What is it?

The engine temperature must be reached within a specified time after starting the vehicle. Engine control units (ECU/PCM/ECM), have a preset value. Engine temperature is crucial for overall vehicle performance. Fuel vaporization is efficient when the temperature of the fuel falls within the right range. This leads to complete combustion. Fuel consumption will increase if the engine temperature is not at its optimal operating level. A temperature that is too high can cause serious damage to the engine. The cooling system of the engine must be in good condition to avoid additional problems and costly repairs.
When you turn on your vehicle, the ECU operates in an open-loop operation mode. Your vehicle switches into closed-loop operation once the engine temperature reaches operating temperatures. Based on sensor data, the ECU calculates air and fuel mix. The ECU will set the P0125 code if the engine doesn’t reach a sufficient temperature. It does not take control of the fuel management system.
Note: This fault code may also be accompanied by the codes P0126 or P0128. You must investigate these codes carefully to correctly diagnose the fault.
P0126: Insufficient coolant temperature for stable operation
P0128: Engine Coolant Temperature is Below Setpoint Temperature

What are the causes of fault code P0125?

  • Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
  • Short circuit, or other problems in the ECT sensors cables or connections
  • Corrosion in the ECT connector or loose connections
  • Low Coolant Levels
  • Coolant leaks
  • Thermostat does not open at the right temperature or remains open
  • ECU Fault

What are the symptoms of fault code P0125?

  • Fuel consumption increases
  • Engine fault light illuminates
  • The heater is not working properly
  • Overheating of the engine
  • Increased emissions values

How to Fix Fault Code P0125?

P0125 may appear intermittently. It may take some time to identify the root cause. It may be necessary to use advanced scanning tools in order to test and read temperature values.

  • Check the coolant level when the engine has cooled down and top it up if necessary.
  • Check the thermostat and replace it if necessary.
  • Check cables and connectors that are part of the cooling system.
  • Repair or replace any connections that appear to be faulty.
  • Check for leaks in the cooling system. Repair any that are detected.
  • If the ECT sensor is faulty, it should be replaced.

How serious is fault code P0125?

The fault code P0125 is a serious error that needs to be corrected immediately. The engine will not overheat and suffer serious damage if the fault is diagnosed and repaired early. Continued use of the vehicle will result in high fuel consumption and increased emissions, as well as damage to the engine components.
