The secondary air system lowers emissions by providing fresh air to exhaust systems. The older vehicles have a belt driven air pump while the newer models use an electric pump. The system is used to quickly heat up the catalytic convertor and reduce emissions when the engine temperature is low. The powertrain control module will set fault code P0411 if it detects that secondary air injection flow is not within specification. A check valve is installed in the air supply line to prevent exhaust gases from reaching the pump. A cut-off valve can also be used to control air flow. It can either be operated by vacuum or electrically. The PCM will activate these valves and the vacuum will automatically go to the cutoff valve to open it. This allows for clean air to be blown. During acceleration, the exhaust backflow and air pump are deactivated.
Not all vehicles are equipped with a secondary injection air system.

What Are the Causes of Fault Code P0411?
- Faulty air infusion pump
- Faulty air injector pump relay
- Faulty Air Control Valve
- Leaking system pipes or hoses
- Circuit problems, such as damaged cables and loose connections
- Carbon buildup excessive in the air injection systems
- Damaged exhaust components (holes)
- A problem with the PCM, e.g. Software that requires an update
What are the Symptoms of Fault Code P0411?
The performance of the engine will be affected by any faults in the secondary air intake system.
- Engine fault light illuminating
- Hesitation when sudden acceleration is made and exhaust backfire
- Engine running rich
- Fuel consumption increases
- Odours coming from exhaust
- Squealing belt noise
In most cases, the P0411 code doesn’t indicate an engine problem. Even if none of the symptoms are present, it is important to take your car to a repair shop if the P0411 code is activated.
Other fault codes that are similar to P0410 include P0412, P0413, P0414, P0415, P0416, P0417, P0418, P0419, P041F, P044F, P0491, and P0492.
How to Fix Error Code P0411?
The codes must first be cleared, and then a road test is performed to determine if the fault has returned. If the fault occurs again, the air-injection system must be visually checked, and any damaged hoses or broken components repaired.
- Replacement air injection pump
- Cleaning of carbon deposits from the secondary air system
- Replace the vacuum hose
- Replacement of the air valve
- Repair or replace wiring harness issues
- Inspect the line leading to exhaust catalysts and exhaust ports, and repair any damage or holes if needed.
How serious is fault code P0411?
Most drivers will not notice any symptoms, other than that the engine fault indicator is illuminated. Some vehicles may experience a slight vibration when accelerating. The P0411 code is directly linked to the vehicle’s emission control system. This code will cause the vehicle to fail its exhaust emissions test until it is fixed.
