The fault code U0100 indicates a loss of signals between an Electronic Control Module (ECM/PCM), and another module. A short circuit may have also caused the communication to be interrupted. All systems of modern vehicles are controlled by computers. Engine and transmission are controlled entirely by computer modules and actuators. To do this, computers are connected via a network known as the CAN Bus. There are multiple data bus networks in many vehicles. These networks allow communication at different speeds and serve different purposes.

There is a “Gateway” module in these vehicles that allows different networks to communicate. It is required because each network uses a different “protocol” or language. Decisions must be taken regarding the priority of the modules and messages on the network.
Engine fault codes (DTCs) are divided into several categories. The codes beginning with Pxxx are related to the powertrain, including engine and transmission. Bxxx codes relate to the body computer. Cxxx codes are related to the chassis. Uxxx codes indicate that there has been a network communication problem between modules.
What is CAN Bus?
A data bus is used to communicate between the Engine Control Module and other modules of your vehicle. The modules in many vehicles communicate using a protocol known as the CAN (Controller Area Network Bus). It works a lot like the nervous system in your body. The CAN bus is wired through your entire vehicle. It is necessary for the communication between different modules of your vehicle. This includes ABS, ECM/PCMs, Transmission Control Modules (TCMs), and Body Control Modules (BCMs). They can be found anywhere in the vehicle, depending on the manufacturer. These are usually located under the carpet, where the sill plate would be, behind the footwell, under the drivers’ seat, or in the space between the A/C unit and the console. The late model vehicles all have at least 18 modules. Each CAN bus is responsible for managing communication between the ECM, and at least nine modules.

What are the symptoms of fault code U0100?
- Engine fault light illuminated
- Vehicle does not start or stall
What are the causes of fault code U0100?
U0100 is a serious error code that needs immediate attention. This code can be triggered by:
- Faulty PCM/ECM
- Circuit failure in the control module
- Data bus error
- Low Battery Voltage
How to Fix Error Code U0100?
- Cable harnesses, connectors, and other parts should be checked.
- Any broken, worn, or loose cables or pins need to be repaired or changed.
