P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2) Fault: What is it?

P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2) Fault: What is it?

This code may appear alongside misfire codes and oxygen sensor codes. The ECU sets the P0430 code when it detects low catalytic conversion efficiency. The code may appear when the ECU detects a low catalytic efficiency. This can be due to a fuel system problem, a blocked converter, damaged oxygen sensors or a combination. The catalytic convert is located on the opposite side to the number 1 cylinder of the engine.
The P0420 code is similar to the P0430 code. It indicates that the catalytic convertor on the first row of the engine has a fault. Some six-cylinder inline engines have four O2 sensors and two rows of engine. Four-cylinder engines have only one row.
In general, a faulty catalytic convert causes lower oxygen levels (O2). The oxygen sensor detects the change and alerts your vehicle’s computer. The computer will illuminate the engine control lamp and generate the correct fault code.

The catalytic convertor is a device that controls emissions mounted on the exhaust. It converts harmful gases from the engine into harmless carbon dioxide and water vapour when it is working properly.
The system is designed to target three types of enemies:

  • NOx (Nitrogen Oxides)
  • HC
  • CO (Carbon Monoxide, an odorless, invisible and deadly gas).

The modern vehicle is equipped with a component known as a “Three-Way catalytic converter“, which can render the three exhaust gases harmless.

What are the causes of the P0430 fault code?

  • Catalytic converter faulty
  • Damaged oxygen sensor or faulty oxygen sensors causing incorrect readings of emissions levels
  • Cables that are damaged, broken or incorrectly connected
  • Misfiring engine
  • Leaking fuel injectors
  • Damage to the engine
  • Crack in the exhaust pipe
  • Leakage in the exhaust system

What are the symptoms of fault code P0430?

  • The engine fault lamp stays on
  • The engine fault lights flashes at intervals
  • Low idle
  • A slight loss in engine power
  • High emission values

How to Fix Error Code P0430?

  • Diagnose and repair of engine misfiring
  • Replacement of fuel injectors that are faulty
  • Repairing any mechanical damage on the engine
  • Replace oxygen sensors that are faulty
  • Repair and detection of exhaust leaks
  • Catalytic converter replacement

Before replacing parts, clean the sensors and clear the fault codes to see if the problem returns. You could be wasting money if you don’t.

How Serious is the P0430 Fault Code?

Most vehicles with inefficient catalytic convertors will still run well. If the converter fails or becomes internally clogged, then P0430 may cause serious repairs. Catalytic converters are expensive parts. The engine can be damaged and suffer from a reduction in performance. The fault must therefore be taken seriously.
