P0455 Major Evaporative System Leak Detected Fault: What is it?

P0455 Major Evaporative System Leak Detected Fault: What is it?

The fault code P0455 indicates a significant leak in the Evaporative Emissions Control System (EVAP). When the vehicle computer detects a major leak in the EVAP, it will generate fault P0455.

The P0440 code indicates a fault with the EVAP system. P0455 indicates, on the other hand, a serious leak in your fuel vapour recovery system. (Note: This is not a leak of fuel, but a leak of fuel vapour). P0456 is the fault code for minor leaks.

What Causes Fault Code P0455?

Leaks may originate from a variety of components. A fuel tank cap with a cracked or damaged upper portion of the filling neck is the most common problem. Over time, the hoses of the fuel tank and ventilation system tend to crack. The EVAP system has a relief valve that regulates the pressure. A mechanic must check it.
Check the carbon filter on vehicles that use it in the EVAP. It should be checked to see if there are any leaks due to cracks or breaks. Fuel tank leaks can be caused by the fuel level sensor or pressure sensor. The seal of the fuel tap may also be damaged. You may find a small leak even if the fault codes indicate a large leak.

  • Fuel cap not properly closed or left open
  • Fuel tank cap damaged or faulty
  • Fuel tank filler neck deformed
  • Fuel tank cracked or damaged
  • Fuel tank pressure sensor is defective
  • The EVAP is damaged or cracked
  • The EVAP hoses or clamps have been detached, cracked or punctured
  • The EVAP solenoid is faulty, or it’s stuck open
  • The EVAP Drain Valve is faulty and stuck Open

What are the Symptoms of Fault Code P0455?

Check Engine will light up along with the fault codes. The fuel tank or filler area may emit a strong petrol smell. The odour may also reach the engine intake from the vapour line.

  • Check Engine light illuminating
  • Possible fuel odour (quite rare)

How to Fix the P0455 Fault?

A visual inspection will be required by the mechanic to detect any leaks that are obvious. If there are no visible leaks, then a professional leak test using the appropriate equipment should be conducted.

  • Replace the cap if it does not close or fit correctly.
  • If the fuel filler cap is damaged, or if it lacks any device to prevent leakage then you must replace it.
  • The hoses must be replaced if there is an issue.

You will need a scan tool to remove the fault code after you have checked all of these steps. The code won’t disappear by itself.

How Serious is Fault Code P0455?

The code P0455 has no effect on the comfort of driving. If fuel smells are strong or there is a noticeable fuel leak, it’s best to take your vehicle as soon as you can to a qualified mechanic. Fuel consumption can be excessive if there is a leak in the system.

Other codes that are related to fault code P0455 include: P0440 (also known as P0441), P0442 (also known as P0444), P0450 (also known as P0451), P0452 (also known by P0453), P0454, or P0456.
