Powertrain control modules (PCM/ECMs) use data from multiple vehicle components in order to determine the amount of fuel to be supplied to the engine. This information is collected by a variety of sensors to create conditions for optimal engine performance. The MAF sensor is one of the most important sensors for this process. Its purpose is to measure both the volume and the density of the air filtered into the engine. This sensor is used by the PCM, along with sensor parameters to achieve optimum fuel efficiency and power. The PCM will set the P0101 error code when the measured air entering the engine does not meet the parameters specified by its manufacturer.
Some MAF sensors include an air temperature probe.

The MAF circuit fault codes are closely related.
- P0100 Circuit Fault for Mass or Volume Air Flow (A)
- P0102 Low Input Circuit for Mass or Volume Air Flow, ‘A’ Circuit
- P0103 High Input Circuit for Mass or Volume Air Flow, ‘A’ Circuit
- P0104 Intermittent Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit ‘A”

What are the possible causes of fault code P0101?
- Faulty MAF sensors or dirty MAF sensors
- MAF sensor circuit problem
- Vacuum leaks, especially in the air intake tube
- Air filter clogged or incorrectly installed
- Catalytic converter/exhaust clogged
- Other sensors can cause problems (e.g. Problems with other sensors (e.g. throttle position sensor, engine coolant temperature sensor).
- PCM fault
P0101 Error Code: What are the Symptoms?
- The engine fault light illuminating
- Hesitation, jerking and loss of power during sudden acceleration
- RPM fluctuations when idle
- Black smoke from exhaust pipe
- Fuel consumption increases
How to Fix Fault Code P0101?
- The code must be reset if there are no problems. Next, the vehicle should be tested on the road to determine if it returns.
- The MAF sensor and the wiring harness must be checked if the code is returned. You should repair any loose or broken connections, wear, corrosion and/or breaks in the wiring. Disconnect the MAF sensor and reconnect it to ensure a new, clean electrical connection. Make sure there are no sources of high voltage near the MAF sensors and their circuits.
- Remove the MAF sensor and clean it with a spray specially designed for this task if it is dirty. Carbon deposits can accumulate on MAF sensor. They prevent the sensor from working properly. It is a waste to buy a new MAF without cleaning the old one.
- If you find vacuum leaks, fix them. Vacuum leaks may cause the sensor read higher airflow than normal.
- If none of these methods is effective, it’s time to replace the MAF sensor.
How Serious is the P0101 Fault Code?
The code P0101 will not stop you from driving your vehicle, but we recommend that you get it checked out as soon as possible. Under certain conditions, a faulty MAF can lead to excessive fuel consumption or irregular engine operation. Ignoring a fault can lead to serious damage to the engine.
