P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction Fault: What is it?

P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction Fault: What is it?

The fault code P0705 indicates the Engine Control Module or Transmission Control Module has received a transmission range sensor (TRS) error. The TRS sensor can also be referred to as the Transmission Position Sensor, Park Neutral Position switch, gear selector switch or PRNDL input switch. Transmission position sensors are used to tell the ECM or TCM the position of the gear. Some are located inside the transmission body, even though they are usually outside. The P0705 code is set when the ECU/TCM receives a voltage from the transmission range sensors or data that is logically unfeasible.
If, for example, the vehicle is traveling at 60 km/h but the transmission sensor informs the ECU/TCM it is in reverse, then the P0705 error code is generated. The fault code can also be generated if, while the vehicle is traveling at 90 km/hr, the sensor informs the ECU/TCM the vehicle has been placed in park. If the sensor transmits signals to ECU/TCM that indicate the vehicle is in more than one gear at once, then the P0705 code is generated.
Related fault codes include P0706, 0707, 0708 and 0709.

What are the possible causes of fault code P0705?

As the vehicle gets older and more miles, it is more likely that the TRS sensor will malfunction. The sensor may corrode due to weather and other elements. The sensor may read incorrectly, or not at all.

  • The transmission range sensor circuit may be damaged by worn out or damaged cables, connectors and loose connections.
  • Transmission valve body faulty
  • Transmission connections incorrectly adjusted
  • Contaminated transmission oils
  • Faulty transmission position sensor
  • TCM or ECM Faulty

What are the symptoms of fault code P0705?

Drivers may experience performance problems when the fault code P0705 is present. Here are some symptoms to watch out for:

  • The engine fault lamp is on or blinking
  • Gear changes that are hard or delayed
  • The vehicle will not shift into gear
  • A vehicle stuck in gear
  • Incorrect gear changes
  • The instrument panel incorrectly displays the PRNDL indicator
  • Reverse lights are not illuminated
  • Only the vehicle in Neutral or Park position can be driven
  • The vehicle may not start in some cases (you may have to move the gear lever gently up/down to get the vehicle started).
  • High fuel consumption

How to Fix Fault Code P0705?

P0705 can be caused by several different things. There are several possible causes for the P0705 fault.

  • All cables within the TRS circuit must be checked and, if damaged, repaired.
  • Replace the TCM if it is faulty
  • Replace the ECM if it is faulty
  • Replace transmission fluid and filter
  • Repair the cable connection between the gear selector and the gear lever

How Serious is Fault Code P0705?

The fault code P0705 does not pose a risk to life. It may, however, cause the vehicle not to start. The vehicle may enter limp mode, have faulty gear shifts, or experience engine performance problems. The fault should be repaired as quickly as possible.
