The powertrain control module of your vehicle continuously monitors for leaks or other problems in the Evaporative Emission Control System. The fault code P0442 will be triggered when a fuel vapour is detected in the EVAP. The P0442 fault code indicates a minor leak.

What Are the Symptoms of Fault Code P0442?
Unlike some other problems with your vehicle, a leaking EVAP may not have a significant impact on the driving performance of your vehicle. The engine fault light may be the only thing that illuminates. You may smell fuel or exhaust fumes depending on where the leak is located and how severe it is.
Possible Causes of Fault Code P0442?
This code can be seen for a number of reasons.
- Fuel tank cap that is loose, faulty or incorrectly installed
- Fuel tank caps that do not meet the standards of the vehicle manufacturer
- Leakage in EVAP lines and hoses
- A crack or small hole in the canister of carbon dioxide
- Leaking internal valve or ventilation system
- Damaged ventilation gasket
- Fuel tank leakage
- Faulty Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor

How to Fix Error Code P0442?
You need to know what the cause of the fault code is. The problem can be resolved without much difficulty. Simply remove the cap from the fuel tank and replace it. Then, using a scanner, remove the fault code and drive your vehicle for several days. If the code doesn’t return, it is likely the fuel tank cap.
It is possible that the fuel tank cap is worn out or not compatible with the EVAP System. Replace the cap with the original to resolve the problem.
Visually inspect your EVAP canister and hoses if tightening the fuel tank cap or replacing it does not fix the problem. The hoses should be checked for holes or tears, and the canisters for cracks. Replace the component that is damaged if you notice any issues.
Sometimes, visual inspection of the EVAP system and working on the cap of the fuel tank may not be sufficient to fix the problem. Use an advanced scanner tool to test for EVAP leaks. The scanning tool can detect leaks that cannot be seen with the naked eyes or are hidden.
Check the solenoid and EVAP purge if they are not working. Replace the faulty part with the original. You may have to do a smoke test if this does not work to find the leak.
- Fuel tank cap replacement
- Fuel tank replacement
- Replacement of the Carbon Canister Tank
- Replacement of EVAP System Lines
- Replacement vent or breather valves
How Important is Error Code P0442?
P0442 does not cause any symptoms, other than to illuminate the engine fault lamp. This code indicates that fuel vapours from the EVAP are leaking into the air. You may notice a slight increase in fuel usage.
