EGR systems are used to control the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx). The Engine Control Module (ECM), when the sensor that monitors the position of EGR valves sends lower voltage signals than normal, stores the P0405 error code in its memory. When fuel is burned, temperatures can reach 2,500° Fahrenheit (1,371° C) or more. The high temperatures can cause the formation of NOx gas, which is harmful to both human health and to the environment.
The EGR valve returns a portion (a small amount) of exhaust gas to the intake manifold. Returning exhaust gas to the cylinders reduces combustion temperatures and improves NOx (nitrogen dioxide) emissions.
The EGR position sensor, as its name implies, detects the EGR valve’s position. Engine Control Module monitors and adjusts the EGR valve’s operation by monitoring the EGR sensor. The P0405 code is activated if the signal produced by the sensor falls below the parameters pre-programmed.

What are the causes of fault code P0405?
The following are some of the causes that may trigger the PCM’s P0405 fault.
- Faulty EGR Valve Position Sensor
- EGR valve faulty
- Damaged cables or loose connections can cause circuit problems
- PCM related issues
It is important to note that moisture can form in cold weather and freeze, causing the EGR valves to become stuck. Once the vehicle has warmed up, this problem may go away. Carbon or other deposits may also cause valves to stick and seize.
What are the symptoms of fault code P0405?
The vehicle’s driving ability may be affected if the EGR position sensor fails. In some cases, however, the symptoms may not be visible. Code P0405 can cause symptoms such as:
- The engine fault light will flash or continuously illuminate
- Increased NOx emissions results in failure of emissions test
- Reduced Engine Performance
- The EGR valve may not close as quickly as it should, causing a stuttering acceleration
- Premature ignition can cause engine knocking
- Fuel consumption increases
- Engine misfiring, or stalling
How to Fix Error Code P0405?
- The EGR sensor position must first be tested and the cables and connectors checked.
- Any cables that cause a short-circuit or loose connections need to be corrected.
- Test whether the PCM sends a 5-volt reference signal to the sensor.
- The EGR position sensor and EGR Valve should be inspected and replaced, if needed.
How serious is fault code P0405?
The EGR system may be disabled by the fault code P0405. This can have a negative impact on engine performance. This fault must be corrected as quickly as possible.
