P0113 Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 1 Circuit High Input Fault: What is it?

P0113 Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 1 Circuit High Input Fault: What is it?

The P0113 code is a general fault that occurs when the Intake Air Temperature sensor outputs a value higher than expected. This code is set by the engine computer when there is a problem in the IAT circuit 1. The IAT sensor measures the temperature of the air inside the intake manifold. The sensor sends its readings to the ECM. This data is used by the ECM to control the combustion chamber, fuel injectors and the air/fuel mix. This information is important for the engine to burn fuel efficiently.
The ECM will generate the P0113 code if it receives a voltage signal above the maximum. If the sensor output voltage is greater than 4.91 V and continues for at least 0.5 seconds, the ECM will determine that the IAT sensor has an open circuit. It will then set the P0113 code. The ECM is aware that the intake manifold temperature cannot be below -40 degrees. This information is wrong.
Not all engines have the intake air temperature sensor (IAT). The P0113 fault does not apply to every vehicle. Some vehicles instead use a Mass Air Flow Sensor. The ECM needs to be aware that the temperature of the air is being measured in some way. Cold air has more oxygen molecules per square centimetre than warmer air. This difference must be taken into account to get the right air/fuel mix.
The IAT is an electronic thermistor which changes resistance in response to temperature. The resistance increases as the temperature rises. The voltage to the ECM will reach its maximum if the sensor is disconnected. This is equivalent of -40 degrees.

What are the symptoms of fault code P0113?

  • Engine fault light illuminates (sometimes, no other symptoms are present).
  • Excessively rich or lean air/fuel mixture
  • Start-up problems or engine running rough
  • Issues related to ignition
  • Acceleration / loss of power
  • High fuel consumption
  • High emission values
  • Fuel odour coming from exhaust

What are the causes of fault code P0113?

  • Filter dirty or faulty
  • IAT connectors and cables with loose connections or that are corroded and weak
  • If the IAT sensor has been integrated into the mass airflow sensor (MAF), then there may be problems with the sensor.
  • ECM problems

How Important is Fault Code P0113?

The ECM will operate in safety mode if the fault code is P0113. Safety mode is activated to prevent faults. However, it can cause engine performance problems depending on the engine strategy of the manufacturer. If you operate the vehicle this way for a long time, the internal engine components may fail.
