The engine’s variable valve timing (VVT system) is the cause of fault code P0010. The Engine Control Module’s (ECM/PCM/ECU), if it has set the fault code P0010 indicates a problem with the solenoids of the VVT that send oil pressure to the actuator in the VVT system. The camshaft angle is used to advance or delay the valve opening time. Some VVT systems change only the timing of either the intake camshaft or the exhaust camshaft. Others change both. The engine can deliver more power while consuming less fuel in different operating ranges. This also helps to reduce emissions.
The camshaft drive gear (part of the actuator) is responsible for changing camshaft angles. VVT solenoids provide oil pressure to the motor. Sensors are used by the ECM to detect the position(s) of the camshafts and crankshaft. The ECM uses sensor signals to control ignition, valve lift, and fuel timing at different speeds and loads. The ECM will generate fault code P0010 if it attempts to adjust intake camshaft time and detects a problem with the oil control (OCV) valve or valve solenoid circuit.
The engines of vehicles with 6, 8 or V engines can be divided into two sections. Bank 1 is the side of the engine with the first cylinder. Bank 1 is not valid because the engines in 4-cylinder inline vehicles aren’t divided. The intake camshaft for a DOHC engine is indicated by ‘A.
The P0010 fault code can also be accompanied with P0011, P0012, and P0020.
Table of Contents
What are the symptoms of fault code P0010?
- Engine fault light illuminated
- High fuel consumption
- Engine performance decreases at high revs
- Irregular idle
- Misfiring engine
- Engine noises – knocking/rattling
- Increased emission values

What are the causes of fault code P0010?
- Damaged cables and circuits are the result of a faulty VVT solenoid.
- Engine timing errors
- Formation of sludge in engine oil due to an oil shortage
- Wear of timing chain, guides and gears
- Faulty crankshaft sensor
- Faulty camshaft sensor
- ECM Fault
How to Fix Fault Code P0010?
- Check the engine oil condition and level.
- Use the correct oil and replace the oil filter at the same.
- Replace a VVT solenoid that is faulty (oil control vale)
- Replace faulty actuators
- Replacement timing chain and other components that are faulty
Is Fault Code P0010 Important?
This fault code does not stop your vehicle from working. If this code isn’t resolved, your vehicle will lose power and fuel efficiency. This code may cause your vehicle’s emissions test to fail.
