Modern vehicles are equipped with a diagnostic system that makes it easier to identify faults. You can get a fault code for your vehicle using a special tool. This will tell you what the problem is. In theory, the system is designed to work this way, but in reality, it’s a bit more complicated.
If you connect an OBD-II scanner to the vehicle computer and get the P0496 code, it means that the EVAP is not working properly. The code will not help you if you do not know what it means. It will however help your mechanic. You can read this article if you want to know what the problem is without sending your car to a mechanic.

What is the P0496 Fault Code?
You must first understand the EVAP system of your vehicle. Petrol vapours are hazardous and can harm you and the environment if exposed to them for a long time. It is important to avoid releasing these vapours into the air, especially with millions of cars on the road.
The EVAP system’s purpose is to stop large amounts of fuel vapour escaping into your car and entering the atmosphere. The PCM will display the P0496 error code if there is an excess of flow in the EVAP.
What causes P0496 fault code?
The P0496 error code can appear for a variety of reasons. These include:
- A defective purge or ventilation solenoid/valve
- Canister valves that are faulty or blocked
- Faulty EVAP/fuel pressure sensor
- Electrical connections that are not up to standard
- Faulty ventilation solenoid
Other causes could be at play in some vehicles. In Hyundai vehicles it could be the EVAP system retainers. While in Kia or Mazda vehicles it could be a faulty drainage flow sensor.
What are the symptoms of fault code P0496?
This error code has very few symptoms. It is likely that the vehicle will illuminate the engine warning lamp. The vehicle might be hard to start. This symptom is usually not associated with the EVAP. The best way to get the most accurate results is by using an OBD scanner to read the code from the vehicle’s computer.
Is the P0496 Fault Code Important?
You are not at risk if your EVAP system fails. You will, however, contribute more than the average car to the environmental crisis. You may fail an exhaust emission test if you ignore and leave the problem as is. As the engine starts to run rich, it may damage the catalytic convertor and other exhaust components. The vehicle may smell like petrol. You may have other problems if you don’t fix the problem. Examples: clogged EVAP channels, clogged valves, mechanical and electric faults, etc.
How to Fix the P0496 Fault Code?
The problem is caused by a defective drain solenoid. Check the fuel tank pressure. You must replace the solenoid valve if the pressure is excessive. The EVAP system should be visually inspected to determine if this is the problem. The sensor could be defective or short-circuited if there isn’t a mechanical issue.
- Scan the code using a scanner
- Start the vehicle and reset the code to see if it returns.
- Check the fuel cap
- Drain solenoid valve: Check it!
- Replace the fuel tank pressure sensors if necessary.
