Fuel pressure is transferred from the fuel tank to the engine through the fuel line. Engine Control Modules (ECM/PCMs) regulate pressure levels by adjusting fuel pumps or fuel volume regulators, depending on how the fuel system is designed. The ECM will display the P0087 error code if it detects that fuel pressure has fallen below levels necessary for the engine’s proper operation. The fuel pressure and amount delivered to the engine can be altered by adjusting the fuel regulator or pump. The vehicle needs more power when it accelerates, climbs ramps or is loaded. In such situations, the ECM will increase the fuel pressure in order to provide more fuel to your engine. In other cases, the ECM reduces fuel pressure to lower consumption.
Fuel pressure is measured by a sensor located in the fuel pipe (Fuel Pressure Sensor). The ECM will set the P0087 code if the pressure is too low.

What are the possible causes of fault code P0087?
Possible causes include:
- Dirty or clogged filter or strainer
- Fuel line restriction due to kinks or bends
- Faulty fuel pump module
- Fuel injection pump broken or worn
- Fuel level is critically low
- Faulty fuel pressure sensor
What are the Symptoms of P0087 Fault Code?
- Engine performance decreases
- Engine fault light illuminates
- When accelerating at high RPM, there is a loss of power or hesitation
- Irregular idling
- Engine misfiring, or stalling
- The engine running rich can cause the Oxygen Sensor fault code
- Fuel consumption increases
How to Fix Fault Code P0087?
- Replace the fuel strainer or filter.
- Replace the fuel pump
- Replace the fuel pressure sensor
Some vehicles do not have an external filter. Some vehicles have only a fuel filter attached to the pump. In most cases the fuel tank needs to be removed, so these units are usually replaced in one piece.
How Serious is Fault Code P0087?
The fault code P0087 may cause serious driving issues. To ensure safe driving, the vehicle must be diagnosed immediately if it begins to malfunction or misfire. The engine can stall if the fuel pump fails, or clogs up the fuel filter.
