P0014 is an error code that refers to variable camshaft time. The P0014 code is generated by the engine control module when it detects an issue with the timing of exhaust camshafts and valves. This code is found in vehicles with OBD-II or VVT technology. These include Toyota, VW and Honda.
The VVT (Variable valve timing) or VCT(Variable camshaft timing) increases fuel efficiency and engine performance through the regulation of when intake and exhaust vents open and shut.
Oil control valves, also known as variable timing solenoid valves, are used by the ECM to control the camshafts. P0014 is a fault code that relates specifically to camshaft time.
The engine fault light will come on if the camshaft is set above the specified limit. The bank 1 is the side of your engine that contains the number 1 cylinder. The ‘B camshaft’ refers to either the “right”, “rear” or exhaust camshaft.

What causes fault code P0014?
- Low engine oil level
- Oil viscosity incorrectly affecting the oil viscosity of the oil flowing to/from camshaft actuators can cause excessive or restricted oil flow.
- Incorrect camshaft timing
- Valve control solenoid faulty or open
- Damaged or faulty valve control solenoid wiring
- Faulty engine control unit

What are the symptoms of fault code P0014?
- Engine control light illuminates. If the camshaft is too high, it may be difficult to start the engine.
- Fuel consumption can increase
- Misfiring, stalling and Idling issues
- The vehicle could fail the emissions test
- Engine knocking/pounding
Note: The symptoms observed in your vehicle can vary depending on where the camshaft is located.
How to Fix Fault Code P0014?
- The engine oil condition and level must be checked. Use the correct engine oil and replace the oil filter.
- Repair and replace the cables that lead to the oil-control valve (OCV), located on the row one exhaust camshaft.
- Replace the row 1 oil control valve on the exhaust camshaft (OCV).
- As specified in the manual, you must repair or replace the timing chain and camshaft actuators.
This code may be caused by worn camshaft chain guides or a slipping timing due to tensioner failure.
How serious is fault code P0014?
Fault code P0014 is quite significant. The engine can run in an irregular manner, or have difficulty starting. Fuel consumption increases. On the pistons and engine valves, carbon deposits can form. The timing chain can skip teeth if the vehicle is used for a long time with an incorrect camshaft. This will cause the valves and pistons to be in contact.
